Our client, a leading timber engineering company, is looking to recruit a highly skilled and motivated individual to the role of Graduate Buyer to work as a key member of the UK Procurement team reporting to the Traded Products Purchasing Manager.  You will be primarily based at their largest production and distribution facility based in Boston, Lincolnshire with national travel also required.

The Assistant Buyer will be responsible for the on time in full delivery of a wide range of products sourced from suppliers based in the UK, Europe, South America and Asia. 

Working closely with the Purchasing, Sales and Supply Chain functions, the Assistant Buyer will support the business’s ambitious growth plans by purchasing inbound raw materials and finished goods, ensuring best possible quality and value is achieved, whilst maintaining close strategic supplier relationships.

Main Responsibilities:  

  • Purchasing a wide range of products to satisfy the sales forecast

  • Support the sales team by negotiating and agreeing customer specific quotes

  • Provide the sales team with accurate cost price information

  • Work with suppliers to ensure on time in full delivery against contracts

  • Work with suppliers to improve product quality

  • Manage any claims against the supplier through to a satisfactory conclusion

  • Support the procurement department by identifying potential new suppliers in line with the business’s new vendor approval framework

  • Work with Supply Chain Planning to monitor sales against forecast and act accordingly where any potential shortages of material are identified.

  • Ensure vendor compliance with various regulations, including Construction Products Regulations and Chain of Custody (COC)

  • Assist in negotiating contracts for the outsourcing of products and services

  • Support in the day to day running of the procurement department

  • Producing reports either ad-hoc or on a planned basis.


  • Educated to degree level in a relevant degree discipline

  • At least 1-2 years relevant buying/procurement/commercial experience

  • Strong commercial acumen and solid decision-making skills

  • Numerically oriented with a keen eye for detail with a firm grasp of typical financial KPI’s and how to influence these

  • Highly organised and able to work under instruction as well on your own initiative

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to engage at every level of the business as well as strong influencing and negotiation skills

  • Professionally presentable, enthusiastic, driven and self-motivated, with the ability to work under pressure and prioritise workload

  • Excellent IT skills with particular strengths in Microsoft Office applications

  • Experience with ERP/MRP systems, with SAP knowledge - advantageous

  • Full UK Driving Licence

  • Be prepared to travel both domestically & internationally
